We’ve been nominated for the European Podcast Awards!

Published by Gary under Celtic Mythology, Episodes, Podshow, Website

/>

We have been nominated for placing in the the European Podcast Awards for 2010. That’s really cool! It would be lovely to win an award so if any of you would like to vote for us, it would be greatly appreciated! So what are the European Awards all about?

(EPA) is organised by the "Initiative European Podcast Awards" with the kind support of OLYMPUS. The awards are for audio podcasts which are meaningful, original and popular, and of course are made in Europe.

I think our Podcast qualifies on all of those counts. :)

We’re looking forward to this years suggested podcasts. It takes less than a minute to fill in the online form under "Propose Podcast." From all the nominated podcasts we will be awarding prizes at a national level – and finally to the four best podcasts allover among all participating nations the title of "European Podcast of the Year".

Under "Vote and Win" you can listen to and rate all the podcasts nominated, and by subscribing to the EPA-newsletter you will also have the opportunity to win prizes from OLYMPUS.

Information concerning the participation conditions and the procedure of the Award are available under “Award FAQ”

…and of course we have our EPA-Blog.

Resources on the Celtic Myth website: a reminder, pt 1

Monty Python & the Holy Grail
Pic: Free Movies Database
I thought it was about time to give you a reminder of some of the resources you’ll find on this website and to offer you the opportunity to contribute. We have lists of books, both fiction and non-fiction, a new page for films has just been added and there are many more things to find. I guess it is important to remember that we are trying to make this a community site which means that we absolutely welcome your additions. If you spot a film that should be in the list and isn’t, for example, drop us an email and we’ll add it! Like wise with books and so on. We try to list all Podcasts that we have covered in the shows as well and we have an extremely out-of-date biography list of characters in Irish Mythology. Let’s list what you can find!

Now although there structure of the menu may change as we try to find ways to make it easier to understand, there are two general categories of things we carry that may help you. There are the Celtic resources and there are the Show resources. The difficulty comes because there is obviously a lot of cross-over between these categories <groan> – we need a time-and-motion expert to come up with a brilliant plan :)

The Resources Menu

Image Galleries

Here you will find the galleries of famous Celtic or Fey artists who have been kind enough to submit their work to the site.

Our Photo Galleries

Here is where you will find that we have submitted you to pictures that we have taken – (laughs maniacally!).

Contributor Pages

Now this is probably one of the most exciting places to visit because you can find out all about the artists, musicians and authors who have helped us on our journey. This is is the only place you will find listings of Celtic Musicians only because there are so many of them! Wonderful, isn’t it?

Listener Inspired Work

This is a section that we are very proud of. Anything that you, as a listener, are inspired by the show to create and are then brave enough to send us will be placed here. We have submissions in the artwork, poems and research categories but you can also send us CMP inspired music or stories.

Characters

These are the Biographies of the characters in Irish Mythology. They need some serious updating and probably some re-design as we move into the realms of Welsh Mythology.

Episode Maps

Here you will find maps of the locations mentioned in the first five episodes. Given a lifetime of time or a room-full of staff, these would also be up-to-date but… :)

Celtic Media

In this section, you will find the foillowing sub-sections:

Celtic & Fae Fiction

Books that are conerning the Celts or the Fey in some way.

Celtic & Fae Non-Fiction

Books that are written to study the Celts or the Fey.

Celtic & Fey Films/TV new

Video that has been made that includes both the fantastical and fictional (the majority) but also as many documentaries as we can lay our hands on.

Podcasts

Celtic-related shows, Celtic music shows, stories, audiobooks, Celtic language podcasts and a general catch-all buckewt for any other show we like :)

Celtic Podcast Music

An incredibly useful offsite link, maintained by Stephen, of Celtic Music that has been played on all the various Celtic Music podcasts around the web. Good work, Stephen – keep it up!

Celtic Charities

To help support the Celtic community in their Charity work, we have included some details of those charities that we have been told about here.

Celtic Languages

Resources and tutors that you can find around the web and eventually lists of books to help you in your studies of the Celtic Languages.

The Song of Amergin

Research that was done by the Show and on behalf of the show to find the earliest version of the Song of Amergin to be used in the Show of the same name, Episode 12.

Wallpapers

Some of the artwork that we have made suitable for use as Desktop Wallpaper on your copmputer.

Fun Stuff

Various funny bits n bobs – at the moment a couple of Bitstrips cartoons.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to tell you more about the rest of the site tomorrow.

Decision Time, Folks!

Published by Gary under Celtic Mythology, Episodes, Podshow, Website

Now is the time I could really use your help guys in making a decision as to where to concentrate most of my time. Since coming out of hospital, I have tried to do a bit of everything. The next show I have scripted and the Recording/Studio PC is now fixed and ready to record. Much of our hardware, server, firewire interface etc. is in need of repair so a fair bit of hardware maintenance continues as finances allow. Every day, I also try to chat to you guys because you are important to us. I have several other Celtic projects under devlopment and you’ve had a clue with the wallpapers.

So, if you would like to select one or more options on the poll, it will really help me know where and in what proportion to spend my time.

Thank you so much guys

Cardiff couple boost the Breton language

Published by Gary under Language, Modern Survivals

fr bz gd 300x200 Cardiff couple boost the Breton language The Brittanica tells us that Breton is “a member of the Brythonic group of Celtic languages, spoken in Brittany in northwestern France. Breton was introduced into northwestern France in the 5th and 6th centuries by Brythonic Celtic refugees displaced from southern England by the influx of Anglo-Saxons. The language is closely related to Cornish and Welsh but has been influenced by French and perhaps by a continental Celtic language formerly spoken in the region.” [Brittanica]

There are about 540,000 speakers of this Celtic language and a Welsh couple are helping to revive it.

The Highland Games keep the Celtic Spirit alive

bilde The Highland Games keep the Celtic Spirit alive The wonderful thing about a mythology like that of the Celts is that it is still so vibrant and alive. Over the centuries it has matured, evolved and developed like a fine wine. The fruit from which it is made is a rare and beautiful specimen, but with the passage of time it has become a full-bodied vintage.

You can’t look at the Mythology in isolation. Take for example, the phenomenon of the Celtic festival that we find in modern times. The celebration of heritage, culture and the stories of myth has travelled all over the world following the path of the Celts as they explored and settled in far-off countries. Now it is no longer strange to find the Highland Games being celebrated in Tallahassee, at  the North Florida Fairgrounds – and celebrated with just as much joy as the Eisteddfod in Wales.

I find it wonderful that the Celtic Spirit can thrive and grow in this fashion and welcome each and every celebration.

We loved the previous location (Sunny Hill Farm on Roberts Road), said organizer Amy Ray. It was so picturesque. But we hope (moving to the fairgrounds) will be better for logistics.

We hope it’ll also allow us to go forward and grow and establish a more active Scottish presence in Tallahassee.

The local collective Celtic community is growing under the influence of such groups as the Tallahassee St. Andrew Society, Tallahassee Irish Society, various pipe bands and fiddle orchestras, and other organizations devoted to Celtic culture and heritage.

The presence of those groups will be felt at this year’s festival, along with visiting entertainers, vendors, genealogists and performers.

We’ll have the Wild Highlanders, a group that recreates the traditional fighting styles of Scottish Highlanders in mock battles and fights,” Ray said. “It’s quite a lively crowd, to say the least.

The festival proper starts at 9 a.m. Saturday and concludes with a ceilidh (pronounced “kay-lee”), a rip-roaring hoedown headlined by Celtic rock group Seven Nations.

Skype Answer-phone now available!

Published by Gary under Episodes, Podshow, Website

Skype Answerphone

Leave us voicemail

Leave us a message on

our FREE Answer-phone!

You should now see a couple of brand-new features appearing on the widget list to the left of the blog and the website. The most important is that we now have a free Answering Machine service using Skype! Skype doesn’t cost you anything to sign up for (go to Skype.com for a free account) and with a headset mic or other form of microphone you can make free phone-calls to other Skype users.

Yes, I did say free! How do they make their money then? Well, I managed to find the answer in one of their FAQs. They make their money from their paid services, such as making Skype calls to ordinary land-lines or mobile phones. Ah – so that explains it :)

All pretty cool, I thought – and apparently everybody in the US has been doing it for yonks, but how does that help us? We’re not always here or we are here and deep in work, but we also don’t want to miss any of your calls or messages. An answerphone would be great – and lo and behold, there is such a service available as an ‘extra’ on Skype! So, we’ve set one up for you to leave us a message for the show.

If you would rather make it just a personal message and not to be included in the show, just say ‘personal message’ or some such anywhere in your message and we won’t include it :)

The other voicemail widget that is still in the widget bar is still useful for those of you that don’t have or want Skype and yet still want to be able to use your phones to call us or send us a message from your computers. Unless you guys find it a complete waste of time/bandwidth (and do let us know), I’ll leave it there.

Podshow Players

I’ve managed to resurrect the old SpringWidgets Podshow Player as well. I know a lot of you like to include this on your own websites and Spring Widgets are notoriously difficult to get the code from, so I’ve included the code on the Promote page so that you can grab it yourself.

There are also another two players there so you can choose one with the best look and feel for your site, and it is fascinating to watch them stop working on a seemingly random basis! I think the SpringWidgets and the Podcast Pickle ones are the most reliable. If you find any other players out there on the web that are doing a pretty good job, could you let me know and I’ll try and include them for you. Thank you :)

Drop us an email anytime at garyandruth@celticmythpodshow.com – thank you :)

Celtic Internet Radio Station to Play Celtic Myth Podshow

Celtic Myth Podshow Logo

IRFT Radio will start streaming the Celtic Myth Podshow from tomorrow, Sunday 10th January 2010. The Celtic Radio station is run and hosted by Sean Owens.

After a bit of a break the radio station is about to hit the internet again with a great line up of music, story, interviews and much much more.

IRFT radio heartily supports our belief that the Oral tradition of the seanchaidhthe should be continued. We believe the ancient stories of the Celtic peoples should be heard by as many people as possible. Gone are the days when the Celts through their Bards, Druids Sheannachi carried the stories of their heritage with them on their travels. Over the centuries many stories have been lost of forgotten.
So we intend to bring these stories alive for anyone who is interested in rich and colourful mythology and heritage of their Celtic ancestors, and it’s great to know there are like minded people out there. IRFT Radio will also be playing unique story and song from our friends The Bards of Mystic. We really looking forward to hearing more of their work.

Do also pop along to the IRFT website ( http://www.irftradio.comlu.com/index.html) where you will find the show schedule, plus some great information. For example they have 126 Irish(Gaeilge) lessons on their website, also links to free help with Scots Gaelic, Breton (Brezhoneg), Cornish(Kernewek), Manx(Gaelg Vannin) and Welsh(Cymraeg) Languages. Some of the IRFT website is still being updated, but once finished the site and the radio show will be a veritable box of Celtic Wonders :)   Enjoy !

CMP Wallpaper #2 released – The Children of Danu explore Erin

Exploring Erin We are proud to announce the release of our second Wallpaper for your computer’s Desktop, initially in a 4:3 ratio and later in 16×9 for widescreen Desktops. This one shows the Tuatha De Danaan, the Children of Danu, exploring the crisp, brand-new Erin for the first time. There are no right answers, but after listening to the stories at the beginning of the Irish Mythological Cycle, can you guess who each of the characters are? A couple of them have definite answers, a couple could be one or more inidividuals…

You can find the new Wallpaper on the Wallpaper Page in all of the sizes I have made for you. If the size you are after is not there, let me know and I’ll make it especially for you.

Sudbury Celtic Festival

celtic Sudbury Celtic Festival I blogged yesterday about the Tallahassee Celtic Festival and Highland Games and today I found another one in Sudbury, Canada. As I said yesterday, I think it is amazing to see this modern day celebration of our Celtic roots – the question I would really like to see answered is: where are the UK Festivals?

Bell Park will erupt with the wail of bagpipes, Scottish sports, Celtic songs and stories, and the smells of traditional meals during the inaugural Greater Sudbury Celtic Festival and Highland Games on May 24.

Derek Young, festival director, said:

The timing for this year’s inaugural festival is great, given that the City of Greater Sudbury is celebrating its 125th Anniversary, and many of our local pipe bands and community partners are also celebrating milestone anniversaries

The festival will feature local singers, storytellers, historians, the Vale Inco Canadian Federation of Scottish Athletes Heavy Games Exhibition, pipe band performances, food, folklore and vendors promoting traditional crafts, gifts, and unique items.

There will be an evening concert featuring Sudbury’s own Duncan Cameron, returning home with his Celtic band, Fig for a Kiss. They will be sharing the stage with Andy Lowe, who will be singing traditional ballads from his CD entitled, Inheritance.
