Visit Tir Na Nog on your PSP or PS2

Pic: gary PSP World report that in Irish mythology, the Tir Na Nog is an mysterious realm that lies off of the Western edge of the map, occupied by the forever young and visited by heroes of Irish lore. It is a fantastic setting for an RPG, and Japanese games maker System Soft seem to agree.

The company has announced that it will be bringing a Tir Na Nog RPG to both the PSP and PS2 systems early next year. The console title is based on an earlier PC game. True to its PC gaming roots, Tir Na Nog features a crisper and more realistic graphical style. Landscapes and enemies took more realistic and more western than the usual anime-inspired JRPG fare.

The series has developed a small but loyal following in Japan, but is virtually unknown outside of that country. Hopefully System Soft will see fit to produce a Western localization of the game, since we can never have too many RPGs on the PSP.

Scions of Celtic Mythology – new RPG from White Wolf

One of White Wolf’s recent ventures is a game called Scion, reports Mad Brew Labs.  It utilizes the familiar d10 based Storytelling System rules that has become the foundation of White Wolf games like the World of Darkness and Exalted.  But what does Scion bring to the game table any of the other White Wolf games, or any game for that matter, doesn’t already?

Two words: Epic Mythology.  Scion allows players to take the on role of the modern day children of the gods as they struggle against their mortal enemies, Titanspawn.   While the game could be played in any timeline, it is intended to be set in the modern world; a modern world without the bleak outlook of the World of Darkness… a more heroic world. “Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches”, based on the classic Welsh “Four Branches” legends, is set in a mystical place on the Celtic fringes of Britain, a place where myth and magic spill into reality, threatening the sanity of a teenage girl and bringing an ancient battle for revenge to a remote Welsh farmstead.

Fight the Twilight of the Celts with ‘Queen of the Celts’

In the year 43 AD,

Roman legions splashed ashore in Kent, unopposed by the Britons led by Caractus, who had sworn to repel them. The Emperor Claudius had dispatched Aulus Plautius and 45,000 men to conquer the mist-covered island where Julius Caesar had failed almost a century earlier.

Over the next 40 years, Roman would clash with Celt in a series of battles that neither realized would determine the future of Western civilization. The Romans broke the Britons, whose furious courage could not match Roman discipline. The island would pass under Roman rule for the next several centuries, implanting a Latin-oriented culture and shoving Celtic ways to the very fringes of Europe. All that would remain were their legends; not least among them the fiery leadership of Boudicca, warrior-queen of the Iceni and resolute enemy of Rome.

The Rome at War series covers Roman battles against both their neighbors and each other. The first game, Hannibal at Bay, covered the last battles of Carthage’s favorite son. The second, Fading Legions, focused on the empire’s latter years, when it was beset by barbarian invasion, an implacable rival, and civil war. Continue Reading »

Celtic Image Galleries Now on-line!

As another resource for those that love the Celts we have started building some image galleries under our Resources section. So far, we have two galleries for you to browse. The first is a set of photographs that Ruth and I took a couple of years ago at a Celtic Festival at Michelham Priory, Sussex, UK and the second is a set of images of miniature figurines used by wargamers to fight with the Ancient Celts on the tabletop.

One of the difficulties that those that have just encountered the Celts is visualising what they looked like. Wargamers often spend a lot of time researching their subject so that their miniatures look very similar to how the original warriors would have looked. So enjoy these photos as an aid to visualising the Celts. Continue Reading »

Celtic Warriors fight off the Viking incursion

At the end of the classical Celtic period, the Irish tribes were harried by Viking invaders. Several battles of historic import occurred from between 719 AD, the first recorded Norse raid to the battle of 1014 AD in which Brian Boru repelled the Vikings in a very costly encounter. It is said that out of 6600 warriors, only 600 survived the day.

Thanks to the War and Game wargaming site, we have some details about this three hundred year period of Viing occupation.

In 795 the first recorded Norse raid took place on Ireland’s north coast. This Irish raid came soon after the first attacks in England. Iona was also attacked in 795 and again in 802. In 806 sixty-eight persons were killed at Iona by raiders. In 807 a new monastic community was begun at Kells, Co. Meath, and was completed by 814, by which time much of the administration had been moved from Iona to Kells. It was during this period or immediately before it that the magnificent illuminated manuscript, the Book of Kells, was completed.
