Tara: Voices from our Past

We found a short film by Mairéid Sullivan about the importance of the Hill of Tara on You Tube. She writes:

Over the past decade there has been considerable controversy regarding construction of the M3 Motorway through the Tara Valley, especially in light of the discoveries at Roestown and more recently Lismullin. While those finds are extremely significant, they pale in comparison to a more recent discovery at Tara.

This short film by the award winning documentary filmmaker and musician, Mairéid Sullivan, shows that the complexity and importance of The Hill of Tara goes well beyond what we’ve known about the site for the past few millennia.

The Simpsons go Irish for Paddy’s Day

Woo-hoo! The Simpsons are coming. On St Patrick’s Day Homer and Grampa will come home in an episode being broadcast in Ireland ahead of its transmission in the US for the first time in the 20-year history of the show, reports the Irish Times.com.

In The Name of the Grandfather sees Homer make Grampa’s dream of a final beer in a pub in the village of Dunkilderry come true.

Homer is prompted into the out-of-character act of kindness for Abe Simpson after forgetting to join him in the father and son three-legged race at Springfield Retirement Castle’s seniors’ sports day.

After a scolding by Marge, Homer takes Grampa across the water to O’Flanagan’s where he claims to have spent the best night of his life. On arrival, however, the village isn’t quite how he remembers it. Continue Reading »

Nicol Williamson, the greatest Merlin ever, passes from us

Nicol Williamson
Pic: Aintitcool
It is with incredible sadness yesterday that we heard that the great Nicol Williamson, multi-talented actor and musician, whose portrayal of Merlin in the genre-breaking Excalibur broke the mould for many of us, had passed away. His Merlin’s wisdom, link to the earth energies and intense, and spark-filled relationship with Helen Mirren as Morgana added a whole new dimension to our perception of the Merlin archetype. As an actor, he has always remained as one of what my family considers, The Classics – those actors whose work is always powerful and innovative.

Every film I’ve seen him in, from Robin and Marian (as Little John), his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the 7% Solution to Father Morning in Exorcist III. I’m still looking forward to finding Wind in the Willows with him portraying Badger and his role as Cagliostro in Spawn (1997) has been memorable. We are thinking of his family in this hour of their grief and of Luke, in particular, who maintained his father’s website and has told us of Nicol’s sad passing and hidden fight with Cancer. Having fought some of that fight myself, I feel particularly empathy for him in his struggles.

Nicol now walks with his ancestors and we pray for his peace, but mostly for the peace and love that those who are left behind sadly need. Our love and admiration goes with him.

His Son, Luke’s, Statement

It’s with great sadness, and yet with a heart full of pride and love for a man who was a tremendous father, friend, actor, poet, writer and singer, that I must bring news of Nicol’s passing. Dad died peacefully in the early hours of the 16th of December after a two year all out, balls to the wall struggle against esophageal cancer. He gave it all he had: never gave up, never complained, maintained his wicked sense of humor to the end. His last words were ‘I love you’. I was with him, he was not alone, he was not in pain.

He leaves behind him an immense body of work: movies, stage performances, music, book narration, poetry and prose. When you saw “Jack, A Night On The Town With John Barrymore” you realised as he sang Nessun Dorma that this man could have been anything, done anything, and been one of the best. The mould is broken, we will never see his like again in the world.

He was the most honest, funny and intelligent man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing; he was my father and words cannot adequately express how proud I am of him. Before he died Nicol was able to finish the CD he had been working on, albeit slightly shorter than it might have been. In the coming month i hope to have it up here on his website.

If anyone would like to express their love or appreciation of Nicol, I would ask them to make a donation in his name -however small- to a charity for children suffering from cancer or other life threatening illnesses.

Nicol was a very private man, he didn’t want people to know that he was ill, he was hoping very much to come out the other side of his battle with “Seamus the Squamous” and bring some awareness to the plight of children suffering from the horrors of cancer in all its various forms.

Dad will live in the memory of all those who knew him, all those who were affected by a performance of his they saw, and all those he made laugh until they couldn’t breathe.

Read about his life and work on his website at nicolwilliamson.com and, if you can, make that donation to such a worthy cause.

Taliesin and the Battle of the Tress by our dear friend, Celestial Elf

The Book of Taliesin is attributed to the 6th C. poet Taliesin and preserves a few hymns, a small collection of elegies and also enigmatic poems such as The Battle of Trees and The Spoils of Annwfn, in which the poet claims to have sailed to another world with King Arthur and his warriors.

The Battle of the Trees in Machinima

I have set Taliesin’s Battle Of The Trees within two other pieces of writing,  firstly Tacitus’ report of the Roman invasion of the Druid island of Anglesey, followed by another poem by Taliesin which had been mixed in with The Battle of The Trees in a method of concealment to hide the poems meaning from those without understanding.

For the written poem and more details about its meaning, please see my Blog; ( http://celestialelfdanceoflife.blogspot.com/2011/07/battle-of-trees.html )

The Power of Names

The Battle of the Trees poem itself famously details the legendary Gwydion’s account of the trees of the forest which he enchanted to fight as his army against Arawn. Within the ranks of Arawn’s forces were a number of mighty warriors, and one of these was invincible as long as his name remained a secret. Gwydion the enchanter rightly guessed the secret name and won the battle saying these words:

Sure-hoofed my spurred horse,
On your shield Alder sprigs,
Bran is your name, Bran of the branches.

Sure-hoofed my horse of war,
On your hand are sprigs of Alder,
Bran you are, by the branch you bear.

However as Robert Graves explores in his book ‘The White Goddess’ the poem is particularly notable for its striking and enigmatic symbolism and the wide variety of interpretations this has occasioned.  Graves suggests that the trees in this poem correspond to the ancient Ogham alphabet, in which each alphabetic character represents a specific musical note, seasonal cycle, mythological tale and deity.

Graves thus argued that the original poet had concealed Druidic secrets about an older matriarchal Celtic religion for fear of censure from Christian authorities, that Arawn and Bran were names for the same underworld god and that the battle was probably not physical but rather a struggle of wits and scholarship: Gwydion’s forces could only be defeated if the name of his companion, Lady Achren (“Trees”), was guessed, and Arawn’s host only if Bran’s name was guessed.

The all-new Spirit of Albion Trailer

As mentioned yesterday, here is the full trailer for The Spirit of Albion the Movie, a film about hope, inspired by and including the music of Damh the Bard. Due to be released on DVD in May 2012. Now you can really get a feeling for where the film is going and what it is about – superb stuff!

As you know this movie was inspired by the works of Damh the Bard and the Director, Gary Andrews, has put the whole story together into something new and astounding, something with a powerful message for today’s youth and we are so excited to see the film’s launch sometime around the end of 2011.

The Albion Diaries tell the Behind the Scenes story of the production of the Spirit of Albion movie. Marq English of MEV Productions is producing these video diaries of the film’s production, so you can get some idea of what’s coming and how it has all been put together.

Video Diary Filmed and Edited by Marq English.

Written and Directed by Gary Andrews.

Welcome to the New Year with the Celtic Myth Podshow

The CMP Logo

We’d like to wish all of our listeners and readers a very happy, prosperous and love-filled 2012! The Wheel has turned again and those New Year’s Resolutions, those promises to do something advantageous, are probably beginning to take effect by now! Some for the better and some for the worse :) Did I really promise I’d do that? How much weight have I got to lose!!!?? So we try to avoid resolutions on New Year’s Eve or Day – they generally get broken anyway and that’s no good for how you feel when facing a challenge.

The Tradition of Resolves

It’s a funny tradition really – I mean, why choose this day to make life-changing choices on? I can’t think of any mythological link to the tradition that might point to a Celtic link for Resolutions – they generally seem to have addressed each problem when the problem arose. There are many traditions associated with the New Year, such as first-footing and the particularly Scottish Hogmanay but these are more in keeping with purification and blessings. Saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming in the new. According to a survey carried out earlier in the year, the five most popular resolutions are going to be:

  1. Be financially-savvy
  2. Read at least one book a month
  3. Eat properly
  4. Get enough sleep
  5. Keep a journal of awesome moments

[Source: Wiki]

I think the only one of those that I manage regularly is the sleeping!

What are our plans for 2012?

So what are we planning for the next year and a day? Well, as you know, our shows has been somewhat erratic over the last two years owing to my health problems, but as I continue to build up strength we are planning to become more regular and reliable with our shows. It still continues to surprise me how weak I actually am – apparently it can take up to 18 months for your cells to recover from having a chemo-beating! How can you be tired at a cellular level? Very strange :)

Anyway, it is a continual joy to us both as my strength increases to be able to do more and more! We can go out and do things together, which leads me on to talk about one of the things we are hoping to be able to do for you this year. In our search to understand how modern Celts live and how they link to the old stories and the mythology, we hope to be able to talk to some influential people in the field and bring you those interviews.

We’re trying to divide the jobs amongst ourselves now to make sure they all get done. I’m writing the scripts fort the new Welsh shows (and the first two are already under my belt! Yay!), Ruthie is working hard on the Holiday Specials and we’ve got Carina trying to fill in all the gaps!

As well as that, we’ve got two Special shows planned all about the Spirit of Albion movie that’s coming out at Beltane. We’ll be talking to the actors and some of the people behind the scenes and trying to give you some feeling of the amazing experience this movie is going to be. To have been involved in the filming was an enlightening experience for us, but more than that there were so many of those ‘magical’ moments in the filming, that the feeling is certain to come across in the final film! We are also hoping to talk to the Director, Gary Andrews, and the Songster, Damh the Bard, about the sources, the inspiration that set the film going in the first place. That should be fun :)

The highly skilled production team have released a wonderful new trailer for the film for the New Year, and if you haven’t seen that already, make sure you check back tomorrow, because we’ll be sure to bring you that as well.

We’ve also got a nice backlog of wonderful music, stories and non-fiction books to bring you some superb pieces from! I’m working on some more artwork for the App, along with some new Appisodes only available to App owners to keep you guys happy as well :) So much good stuff – you won’t be able to believe it! At least, that’s our hope and we keep pinching ourselves to make sure :) It’s going to be a wonderful 2012 for us all!

Kristen Stewart Twilight’s Star films at beach in west Wales

Cast and Crew
Pic: Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority

BBC Wales tells us:  An adventure film starring Twilight actress Kristen Stewart and Oscar winner Charlize Theron has been shooting in Pembrokeshire.

A crew of hundreds has been at Marloes Sands near Milford Haven for the last week making Snow White and the Huntsman.

Up to 80 horse riders in costume have been charging up and down the beach.

Stewart, who plays Snow White, and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth have been spotted on the set.

Filming at the location is due to end on Friday.

The makers had to get permission from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority to film at Marloes.

Tent village

Watching 80 knights in their colourful costumes galloping down the sands has been an amazing sight ”

Phil LeesPembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority

Senior ranger Phil Lees said it had brought many visitors to the area.

“Local people have taken a real interest in the filming, particularly young people, who perhaps would not normally spend time in Marloes.

“Watching 80 knights in their colourful costumes galloping down the sands has been an amazing sight and really captures your imagination.”

He said a tent village had been set up to accommodate the film crew, cast and animals.

“The local facilities have coped well and things have run smoothly,”

he added.

“It’s a deceptively large beach and all the action is taking place on the south end.

Fairy tale

Snow White and the Huntsman filming at Marloes Sands
The film crew have been in Pembrokeshire for a week

“I was down at the north end of the sands checking a cliff area and it was very peaceful and a bit surreal looking back towards swarms of people and equipment.”

The film, which also stars British actors Ray Winstone, Bob Hoskins, Ian McShane and Nick Frost, is described as a twist to the fairy tale.

The Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. It is due to be released next year.

Stewart is best known for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight saga but has starred in other Hollywood blockbusters including Jumper.

Theron, who has not been spotted at the location, won an Oscar for playing serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the film Monster.

It is not the first time Hollywood has used Pembrokeshire’s beaches for locations.

Russell Crowe and a 1,000-strong location crew spent five weeks filming Robin Hood in Pembrokeshire in 2009.

Scenes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the two films of the final book, were shot at Freshwater West.

The Wales Screen Commission said those two films had been worth millions to the local economy.
