Mummer’s Day – Ancient Cornish Tradition
![]() Pic: BBC |
Mummers’ Day, previously known as Darkie Day, was enjoyed by all who attended. |
People danced along the roads to the sound of accordions and music. Collection tins were filled by the many spectators and funds donated will go to local charities including the Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal.
One participant said:
I have had a fantastic day. There was no trouble and everyone was taking it in the spirit it’s meant to be taken. It is a Padstow tradition and will hopefully continue for many more centuries.

This age old tradition continues albeit certain politicians have tried to disrupt it by trying to flag up racisim. Cornwall and the Cornish are not racist. This celebration takes place in a harmonious spirit, and raises funds for needy causes.
I agree and well said, William!
The wonderful thing about re-enacting traditions like this is that people are re-connected to their roots as well as taking part in entertaining and socially beneficial activities.
Personally, I think it is a shame that some see such activities as either racist or politial statements.
