Fifty Warriors and the Ogham

Ogham Stone Andrew West has just published an amazing blog about the recent Time Team discovery of an Ogham stone on the Isle of Man. He throws doubt upon the transliteration/translation made by the Time Team’s expert, Kate Forsyth from Glasgow University. Andrew makes a well argued claim that the inscription is not a record of Fifty Warriors fighting Viking marauders but instead, in common with most other Ogham finds, a commemorative marker for an individual.

His blog explains:

As Time Team’s Ogham stone was found next to a grave (unfortunately it is not clear what the age of the grave is) I think that the most likely explanation is that the stone was used as a grave marker, and its inscription indicated who the occupant of the grave was.

His transciption would read:

..A…MAQI MUCOI CATIALL …, son of the tribe of Catiall[i]
with the ‘A‘ being all that remained of the individual’s name. This article is absolutley fascinating as was the original Time Team discovery. Check it out at BabelStone.
